Sonny Bill Williams beats Barry Hall in a knockout

Sonny Bill Williams was never going to prove his world title belt credentials by fighting Barry Hall but the Kiwi rugby dual international showed his class to defeat the retired AFL star in Sydney on Wednesday night.

SBW did however show he is a thrashing machine with a one-round demolition of Hall inside two minutes, knocking him to the canvas three times before the referee mercifully ended proceedings at the International Convention Centre.

Hall, whose only previous fight was a controversial draw with ex-Cronulla Sharks skipper Paul Gallen in 2019, was out of his depth and looked stunned after the savage onslaught.

Williams headed into the fight with a record of eight wins from as many trips into the ring, including three by knockout.

Hall, the 45-year-old former St Kilda, Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs forward, was giving up nine years and nearly 12kg, tipping the scales at 97.8kg compared to Williams, who weighed in at 109.1kg.

Hall sparked a mini stoush in the weigh-in when he led with his head into SBW as they posed for the obligatory pre-fight photo.

But all that counted for nothing when SBW unleashed his fury to send a message that he is ready for bigger challenges.
